The world's first modern
Olympic Games were not held in Athens in 1896, but in the small town of
Much Wenlock (Shropshire) in 1850, which inspired French Baron Pierre
Coubertin to launch the Athens Olympics half a century later.

Wimbledon - The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club,
which is responsible for staging the world's leading tennis
tournament, is a private club founded in 1868 as The All England
Croquet Club. Its first ground was situated off Worple Road,

Queens Club - Established in 1886, The Queen's Club was the
first multipurpose sports complex ever to be built, anywhere in
the world. It was named after Queen Victoria, its first patron,
and is widely renowned as one of the premier Lawn Tennis and

Twickenham RFC is one of a handful of clubs which can trace
its heritage back to the formative years of rugby. As far back,
in fact, as 1867 when the members of Wellesley House, a young
men's academy, were to be found playing against the towering
giants of rugby football, Richmond. |

Polo Club was founded on 25th January 1955 with the Duke of
Edinburgh, as President. Originally named the Household Brigade
Polo Club, the name was changed to its present form in 1969.
Since inception the Club has grown considerably and it is now
the largest polo club in Europe in terms of membership and
number of grounds. |
Cycling

The Manchester Velodrome is the National Cycling Centre,
Britain's primary indoor Olympic cycle track and widely regarded
as one of the World's finest and fastest board tracks. The
velodrome is the home to the Great Britain Cycling Team. |
Horses

The
Badminton Horse Trials is a three-day event, one of only
five elite international four starevents as classified by the
FEI. "Badminton" takes place in May each year in the park of
Badminton House the seat of the Dukes of Beaufort in
Gloucestershire, England. The event started in 1949. |

The first official races at
Aintree
were organised by a syndicate, headed by the owner of
Liverpool’s Waterloo Hotel, Mr William Lynn. He leased the land
from Lord Sefton, set out a course and built a grandstand. Lord
Molyneux laid the foundation stone on February 7, 1829.The first
Flat fixture was held five months later on July 7. Crowds of up
to 40,000 people attended Aintree’s three meetings a year. |

Ascot
Racecourse is used for thoroughbred horse racing. It is one
of the leading racecourses in the England, hosting 9 of the UK's
31 annual Group 1 races. The course is closely associated with
the British Royal Family, being approximately six miles from
Windsor Castle, and owned by the Crown Estate |
